Canadian tourist plummets to his death during robbery in Barcelona
The holidaymaker fell from a 4.5-meter wall on the Ronda Litoral in Barcelona while trying to flee from the thieves
Police in Barcelona have arrested four young men for the violent robbery of a tourist in the centre of the city. The 25-year-old Canadian holidaymaker died when he fell off a 4.5-metre wall on the Ronda Litoral as he ran from his attackers.
The thieves had been trying to steal the man’s mobile phone.
According to the Mossos d'Esquadra, the local police force, the tourist died from his injuries at the Hospital del Mar in March but his attackers have just been tracked down. Since the fatal fall was deemed accidental, the detainees, aged between 19 and 21, will only be prosecuted for robbery with violence and reckless homicide.
The tragic events occurred at dawn on March 15 when the victim and his two friends were surprised by the group of thieves as they left a nightclub and were heading in the direction of their hotel in the Sant Marti district of Barcelona.
Two of the men were able to run to safety but lost sight of their friend, whom they later found on the ground in critical condition after falling from the wall.
Based on their statements, the police began an exhaustive review of CCTV footage in the area and eventually identified the perpetrators to track their movements.
