In what’s widely being referred to as ‘the match of the year’, young Murcia superstar Carlos Alcaraz put on a spectacular display at the Paris Olympics on Sunday but sadly narrowly missed out on bringing home the gold.
Alcaraz took silver against the legendary Novak Djokovic in a high-voltage final (7-6(3) and 7-6(2)), only the fourth ever in the history of the Region of Murcia.
Having won his first ever Olympic gold medal, 37-year-old Serbian Djokovic has become the oldest man to take the singles title in his sport since 1908, and his performance sadly prevented the 21-year-old Murciano from becoming the youngest.
Even so, he’s the youngest player to reach an Olympics singles final since 1904.

Despite being decided in just two sets, the nail-biting final lasted almost three hours and was a rematch following Alcaraz’s dazzling defeat of Djokovic in the Men’s Wimbledon Final last month.
This is Spain's eighth medal in Paris, the second silver, and the 15th Olympic medal in the history of national tennis.
Alcaraz took to social media after Sunday’s match to celebrate his silver media, writing: “I leave with an incredible silver medal and with my head held high after a tremendous battle today! Congratulations @DjokerNole for that gold that you have sought so much.”
"Silver today. Gold tomorrow," one fan wrote in a fitting response.
