ARCHIVED - Cartagena and San Javier coordinate traffic lights to ease pressure in La Manga
The new lights will take longer to change, allowing a greater flow of traffic into and out of La Manga

The Councillor for Public Roads and Citizen Security announced on Friday August 19 that Cartagena and San Javier City Councils will work together to launch the new Onda Verde system, which will regulate the speed at which the traffic lights in La Manga change.
The main objective of the measure is "to try to make traffic in La Manga more fluid and reduce as much as possible the delays that occur both at the entrance and at the exit," said Juan Pedro Torralba, who reported that the authorities “are taking measures throughout the summer, but at peak times up to 10,000 vehicles accumulate, which means a very important traffic collapse that we want to minimise”.
For this reason, the mayor explained that Cartagena and San Javier “are working together to coordinate the local police of both municipalities and that this allows us to reduce withholdings ."
According to the chief inspector of the Cartagena Local Police, Pedro Moreno, the Onda Verde system will “program the entrance and exit of La Manga and increase the access time of the traffic lights up to 3 minutes, so that we speed up the passage of vehicles as much as possible and thus avoid the collapse of traffic”.
The layout of La Manga means that any accident or delay will continue to cause problems regardless of the new traffic light system but officials have been working all summer to minimise issues, including repairing the median of Gran Vía de La Manga and installing reflective pivots to better segregate the bike lane from the road.
