Date Published: 19/04/2024ARCHIVED ARTICLE -Cartagena asks the public to weigh in on new feral cat legislation
The council wants ideas and suggestions on how the issue of cat colonies in Cartagena should be handled
The local government in Cartagena is introducing a new regulation to manage feral cat colonies within the municipality. This decision aims to control the increasing number of stray cats and minimise any associated health risks.Crucially, before the ordinance is finalised, the Department of Coastal and Health Services would like some input for locals with any suggestions or ideas they might have as to how the stray cat issue should be dealt with. With this purpose in mind, there will be a 20-day public consultation period on the municipal website where residents can share their thoughts or ideas regarding the proposed changes. These contributions will then be reviewed and incorporated into the final version of the regulation if deemed suitable by the city's technical team.Currently, Cartagena follows an existing ordinance concerning pet ownership and protection, under Article 15 of which the council promotes responsible management of cat colonies. This includes minimising disturbances to residents, reducing health hazards, controlling overpopulation and improving the living conditions of the animals.Going forward, the Coastal Department wants to implement stricter regulations governing these feral colonies in order to address any potential health issues arising from their growing numbers. Some of the proposals include clearer guidelines for individuals on managing colonies and setting out specific health and safety standards required for authorising new colonies. The regulations will also involve details for people wanting to register a new cat colony, such as the municipal permits they will need, guidance on feeding and caring for the animals etc, along with any associated rights and penalties.Image: Archive
