Cartagena public park to be named after a famous local conservationist
The huge park on Cartagena Rambla will be christened Ricardo Codorníu y Stárico
At the next plenary session of the City Council, Mayor Noelia Arroyo will put forward a proposition to name the vast public park in the Rambla, by far the largest in Cartagena, after Ricardo Codorníu y Stárico, also known as 'the apostle of the tree'.This suggestion is in response to a request made by the Council of Official Chroniclers of Cartagena, aiming to honour and preserve the historical legacy of this distinguished local, who passed away a century ago.Codorníu y Stárico, a native of Cartagena, was born on July 6, 1846, into a family renowned for their commercial, political, and landholding endeavours. He developed a profound affinity with nature, which inspired him to become an expert in forestry science and a fervent proponent of forest protection. His contributions to the field left an indelible mark on the history of Spain.By naming the park after Ricardo Codorníu y Stárico, the City Council aspires to recognise and celebrate his commitment to environmental conservation and his contributions to the scientific community. This gesture will also serve as a reminder of the importance of protecting and preserving the region’s natural resources for future generations. As a major local figure, Ricardo Codorníu also gives his name to the Visitors’ Centre of the Sierra Espuña park. The Parque de la Rambla, which is situated next to the old Carrefour supermarket and vaccination centre in the western outskirts of Cartagena, will be an incredible green space of more than 330,000 metres. In addition, the forthcoming roll of honours and recognitions will serve as an opportunity to formally designate the approximately 10,000-square-metre garden area, situated beside the existing Carthaginian and Roman camp, as Jardines de Vallejo Alberola. This naming ceremony will commemorate the significant efforts made to transform the space into an iconic public park.In other news: More tractor protests planned on Murcia roads this ThursdayImage: Ayuntamiento de Cartagena
