ARCHIVED - Cartagena to begin scouting land for new motorhome parking
The City Council has finally agreed to a 2018 proposal to make more car parks for caravans

Cartagena City Council has agreed to make space for caravan and motorhome parking, four years after the proposal was put forward.
Back in 2018, it was put before the Council that some car parks for motorhomes would be good to have near the city centre and in those beach areas where these caravanners and camping tourists normally go, instead of vilifying campers for parking where they shouldn’t as happened recently in Mazarrón and Águilas when caravan owners were spotted parking on protected beach land.
As the original proposal put it, “It would be a question of facilitating, not prohibiting or persecuting, motorhome tourism, which tends to be peaceful and the only thing they want is to get to know our land and enjoy our privileged climate”.
This week, Cartagena’s Councillor for Transparency and General Services finally agreed to build new caravan parks as soon as she can find suitable land on which to do it.
“Motorhome tourism is a successful formula that generates economic activity and employment,” she said, but pointed out that most of the demand for these car parks “is in areas prohibited by planning laws, so we have to reject some private projects that come to us as they are against the regulations”.
So far, there has been no indication of how long this consultation period will last, and when construction work will start on the new proposed motorhome car parks.
In response to the controversy of poorly parked motorhomes in Mazarrón earlier this month, the Town Hall has agreed to a new law that would land caravanners with heavy fines for parking outside of designated camping grounds.
