Casas Consistoriales Mazarrón

Casas Consistoriales Mazarrón

The Casas Consistoriales cultural centre in Mazarrón

The Casas Consistoriales is part of the municipal buildings owned by Mazarrón town council and is located next to the modern Ayuntamiento.

Originally built as the town hall of the municipality it is now used as a cultural centre and for municipal plenos.

Construction of this building began on 9th July 1889, with Francisco de Ródenas as the architect, although 2 years later the project was taken over by the Catalan architect Francisco de Paula y Oliver, who also produced several modernist buildings in Cartagena.

This was the era of greatest productivity in the mines of Mazarrón mines, at a time when Mazarrón had 40,000 inhabitants and a substantial and wealthy middle class.

The style of the building is typical of late 19th century modernism, and the interior is particularly noteworthy: the Salón de Actos is a magnificent room and is well worth climbing up the stairs for!

The former Mayoral office is still used for special occasions, although its main function today is as an exhibition space.

There are 2 main exhibition areas, namely the basement, which is an atmospheric and intimate area, and the upper floor, which has an outdoor terrace.

The building was declared a Monumento Historico-Artístico Nacional in 1980, and is open when there are exhibitions.

Access: there are steep main entry steps, although there is an internal lift once inside.

Opening times
