ARCHIVED - Catalonia announces a return to border closures as Covid cases increase
After three consecutive weekends of relative freedom to move around within the region, residents of Cataluña are once again restricted to their own provinces due to an increase in Covid cases.
The regional government in Cataluña has announced a new perimeter closure following a hiatus that began in mid-March. Provincial borders will close again at midnight tonight (Thursday 8 April) until April 19 aiming to contain the spread of coronavirus as the number of cases and pressure on hospitals is on the rise again following the relaxing of restrictions over the Easter holiday period.
Data released on Thursday reported 2,148 new coronavirus cases and 28 deaths in the region during the latest 24 hour period, and the health authorities expect the situation to worsen over the next few days. There are 458 Covid patients in ICUs, 13 more than on Tuesday, and pressure on the hospitals is increasing.
Moreover, there is believed to be a backlog in diagnoses due to the holidays over the Easter period, meaning that besides the sharp increase in hospitalizations, newly diagnosed cases are also likely to pile up in days to come.
1,164,415 residents have been given their first dose of covid vaccinations and 452,156 a second dose.
