ARCHIVED - Catalonia launches campaign for the right of women to go topless
The Department of Equality believes it’s “discrimination” to expect women in Spain to cover their breasts
When it comes to launching equality campaigns, Spain certainly likes to see itself as a pioneer in Europe but it’s fair to say that the government doesn’t always get it 100% right. Earlier this summer, what should have been a positive body image drive dissolved into a shambles when it turned out that several photos had been used without consent, and the latest project from the Department of Equality and Feminism is also going belly-up.
Councillor Tània Verge from the regional government in Catalonia has spearheaded a campaign in honour of International Topless Day, claiming that expecting women to cover their breasts is “discrimination”.
The Generalitat has launched its publicity video on social media, explaining that since a girl’s nipples are always expected to be covered, “sexualisation of women’s bodies starts from an early age”. The controversial drive includes a call to action, reminding all women that it it their right to go topless: “Having to cover your breasts is not normal, it’s discrimination,” the slogan reads.
La sexualització de les #dones comença de ben petites i ens acompanya tota la vida

Que ens haguem de cobrir els pits en alguns espais n'és una mostra. És també #discriminació

To say that social media users have scoffed at the campaign is a bit of an understatement, with many pointing out the contradictory messages (it’s OK to go topless, but in many cultures entire bodies must remain covered) and more women still expressing confusion over being “sexualised”.
“Never have I suffered any kind of academic, labour, economic, social, or family discrimination,” one person tweeted.
To add fuel to the fire, many viewers have voiced their concern over the use of minors in the video: there are several clips of young girls in bikinis on the beach and in the swimming pool, being used in a campaign defending the right of women to go topless.
