CEMEX temporarily halts mining operations in Cartagena West
A new environmental protection measure has been introduced to prevent mining following public opposition

Mexican company CEMEX announced this Tuesday September 5 that it will temporarily halt its mining operations in Cartagena West in search of pozzolana, with which it hoped to manufacture cement.
The announcement comes one day after Cartagena mayor, Noelia Arroyo, said that the new General Urban Development Plan (PGOU) of the municipality would “shield” the entire proposed area with a level of protection that would prevent extractive mining.
There has been significant public opposition to the mining plan on the grounds that it would have negative effects on the local environment.
CEMEX is taking some time to “be able to properly assess the scope of this information,” company sources have indicated in a press release.
The company recalled that the project was approved by the Directorate General of Energy, Industrial and Mining Activity of the Region of Murcia on April 24.
It also explained that its projects are based on principles such as “safety, sustainability, equality and compliance with any applicable law, regulations or legal requirements.”
The company has reiterated its commitment to maintain “rigour and transparency about the project” through the channels of communication open with the different administrations and with people in Cartagena, through different entities and mainly the Federation of Neighbourhood Associations of Cartagena and Region (Favcac).
