ARCHIVED - Changeable temperatures and a chance of rain as Storm Noa hits Spain: weather April 13-16
Parts of southern Spain will reach 34ºC over the weekend but the evenings will be much cooler
The arrival of storm Noa in the middle of the week has meant a drastic drop in temperatures in the east of Spain on Thursday April 13, when the thermometers are expected to plummet between 6 and 12ºC in points of the Valencian Community and Catalonia.
The movement of the storm front to the Mediterranean area on Thursday will also leave plenty of rain in the Balearic Islands and Catalonia, mainly, as well as strong gusts of wind and an intense maritime storm.
Likewise, the rains will continue in points of the eastern Cantabrian Sea and in the north of Navarra, where they will be persistent and likely accompanied by storms.
This drastic temperature drop between Wednesday night (April 12) and Thursday means that the snow levels could fall to as low as 800 metres in the Pyrenees at dawn, although they will rise again as the day moves on.
The weather front will mainly affect northern Spain and the rest of the country should enjoy clear skies, with the mercury climbing as high as 28ºC in Murcia and touching the mid-20s in the likes of Alicante and Malaga.
Noa will begin to ebb away on Friday April 14 but another front will sweep across the far north and cause some showers. Elsewhere, the day will again be bright and sunny and the daytime temperatures will begin to rise, although a lack of cloud cover means that the evening will be noticeably more chilly.
Many provinces in Murcia and Andalucía will again experience highs of 28ºC on Friday.
As we head into the weekend proper, the thermometers will climb steadily in the south, where the temperatures will exceed 25 or 30ºC. This, together with strong breezes, means that the risk of forest fires has been escalated to ‘very high’ in the southeast. In the extreme south, towards the Guadalquivir valley, the temperatures will have no trouble hitting 33 or 34ºC.
There will again be plenty of light morning rain in northern Spain on Saturday April 17 but this will ease off throughout the day; the overcast skies in the morning will also give way to lots of sunny spells across the country in the afternoon.
On Sunday April 16, the daytime temperatures will be between 5 and 10ºC above average in most of the country, although the night will be more in line with what’s expected for mid-April. This dramatic difference between day and evening is what is known as ‘onion days’ since we layer up early in the morning, strip off in the afternoon when it becomes warmer and wrap up again at night.
North and easterly winds will continue to dominate in most of the country, but no weather warnings have been put in place for Sunday.
