Chilly but dry run-up to Christmas: Spain weather forecast Dec 18-21
Temperatures will still approach 20ºC in large parts of southern Spain this week
Weather outlook on Tuesday December 19
The powerful anticyclone that is blanketing much of Western Europe will ensure the weather remains stable and pleasant in Spain on the run-up to Christmas, with very little rain or snowfall expected aside from some isolated episodes in the north of the country.
However, temperature-wise, it will be a game of two halves as the mercury along Mediterranean coast is expected to reach almost 20ºC at the height of the day, while inland it will plummet to well below zero.
Monday December 18
The day as a whole will be slightly cloudy in most of the country after a more overcast start in coastal areas. Daytime temperatures will begin to climb in the northeast of the country with few changes elsewhere, and the evening will be noticeably cooler than previous days in western Andalucia.
With this change there’s a good chance of frosts in the Pyrenees and a northerly breeze could create a wind chill on the southeast coasts and the Balearic Islands.
Tuesday December 19
Although the weather on Tuesday should still be settled, the anticyclone will begin to weaken as an Atlantic front enters the northwest of Spain in the evening, creating largely overcast skies and bringing some light rain to Galicia and Asturias.
Maximum temperatures will increase on the coasts of the northwest and the east, particularly in the Valencian Community which will exceed 21ºC. Night-time temperatures will also climb in northern Spain but drop elsewhere.
With the exception of the southwest, weak frosts are expected in most of the country.
Wednesday December 20
The incoming Atlantic front will cross Spain and the Balearic Islands from the northwest on Wednesday, resulting is mostly cloudy skies and rainfall in the north, while showers could spread further south to parts of Andalucia.
The mercury will continue to rise in the northeast but temperatures will fall everywhere else, dipping into single digits inland. At night, the thermometers will tend to increase everywhere but the southwest of the country.
Moderate frosts are expected in the Pyrenees, which will be weak in surrounding areas to the south.
An intense wind from the north will blow across mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, and the gusts have prompted an orange weather alert in the Valencian Community, Catalonia and the Balearics.
Thursday December 21
By Thursday, the entire country will be exposed to a chilly flow from the north, which will result in mostly cloudy and overcast skies in northern Spain and plenty of rain. The rest of the country should remain dry though, although the north of the Canary Islands can expect some scattered showers.
No major changes in temperatures are expected, with increases in maximum temperatures inland and decreases on the coasts predominating. Locally moderate frosts are expected in the Pyrenees.
