ARCHIVED - Choking baby rescued from Madrid elevator
After swallowing a small object, the baby became trapped in an elevator with her parents in the La Latina district of Madrid
Samur-Civil Protection workers have saved the life of a 13-month-old baby who swallowed a bottle cap before being trapped in an elevator with her parents in a building in Madrid.
The terrifying event occurred at around 1.45pm on Monday September 13 when the infant’s parents realised she couldn’t breathe after swallowing a bottle lid. They rushed her into the elevator of their building on Boadilla del Monte road in the Madrid district of La Latina with the intention of getting their car from the garage and driving her to the emergency room.
Incredibly, the elevator got stuck between floors and the frantic parents were unable to open the doors.
They called the 112 emergency number and firefighters managed to free them within a few minutes. It was confirmed that the baby girl was gasping for air and that she was close to cardiac arrest, so they administered oxygen while waiting for the Civil Protection team to arrive.
Health personnel managed to extract the cap from the little girl’s throat and after stabilising her, the baby was transferred with her parents – along with a stern warning to keep small objects out of reach – to a hospital in Madrid where she is recovering well.
