This was the Christmas weekend in Spain

It was mainly a calm and homely Christmas for most people in Spain this year, bringing a modicum of peace and tranquility to what was at times a troubled and turbulent year, especially in the spheres of politics and social cohesion.

In his annual Christmas speech, the King of Spain Felipe VI called for unity in Spanish society to strengthen the country’s democratic system and tradition.

He also defended the Spanish Constitution and the transition from dictatorship to democracy, and assured his subjects that Spain is a great nation that will be able to overcome the current economic crisis.

This was Felipe’s ninth Christmas message as King, and attracted an average audience viewing of 6.7 million viewers (out of Spain’s population of 47.33 million people). That’s a drop of 1.2 million viewers from last year.

Meanwhile, the British Embassy in Madrid shared all the fantastic entries in their yearly Christmas card competition for the children at La Paz hospital, which is located right next door to the Embassy.

“The children are asked to create drawings of Christmas in the UK and the winner is used as the Embassy’s Christmas card,” they explained. “We thought you would like to see all of the amazing pictures that the children created.”

The people of Madrid were less impressed with the scenes left by Christmas celebrations near the Santiago Bernabéu football stadium after hundreds of young people held an enormous ‘botellón’ illegal street drinking party in the Spanish capital that left the calles strewn with litter.

There was also tragedy after a bus careered off the side of a bridge and into an overflowing river in bad weather conditions in the northern Spanish province of Pontevedra, killing seven people.
