ARCHIVED - Christmas lights 2021: calendar of the best shows throughout Spain
The celebrations in Spain are expected to be bigger and better than ever this Christmas
Halloween is just behind us but the people of Spain now have their sights firmly set on the festive season, and the switching on of the iconic Christmas lights in cities across the country is always a spectacular event. The celebration is all the more significant this year since many of the festivities had to be severely curtailed during the coronavirus pandemic.
Municipalities are already finalising the preparations, which in many areas will include parties and musical events without mobility or capacity restrictions.
Madrid
The official date for the lighting show has not yet been confirmed, although all evidence points to November 25, since the festive event has always been held on the last Thursday of the month.
For the 2021 Christmas extravaganza, the regional council plans to spend 3.6 million euros on lights for the city, 11% more than last year.
Barcelona
The Barcelona City Council is investing around 2 million euros this year and has announced that the switching on of the lights will occur on Wednesday November 24 at 6:30pm. They will not be taken down again until January 6 2022.
Valencia
The streets and squares of Valencia will be illuminated from December with lighting that includes Christmas decorations in the centre, in 13 neighbourhoods and in the different towns of the city.
One of the main novelties this year will be in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, where two huge Christmas motifs will be installed, one reaching 15 meters and the other 11 meters, which will have moving lights and music and will perform an audiovisual show every hour until 9pm.
Sevilla
While no official date has been set, the Christmas lighting will most likely be switched on during the last weekend in November, the same as 2019. Last year, the event was held on December 7 without prior notice in order to avoid crowds congregating. With an investment of just over one million euros, 287 streets will be illuminated, most of them in the Old Town.
Málaga
Lastly, Málaga has planned a spectacular show this year complete with traditional music after the lights have been turned on in Calle Larios on November 26.
