Cleopatra and Ancient Egypt season in Cartagena summer 2023
A superb exhibition, guided tours and family activities explore the influence of Cleopatra on the Roman city of Carthago Nova
A season of tours, exhibitions and activities related to the revered Egyptian Queen Cleopatra and other aspects of Egyptology is being held in Cartagena this spring and summer, one of the highlights being an exhibition entitled “Tesoros de Egipto” in the remains of the Roman Augusteum building.
The exhibition features reproductions and replicas of over 100 objects related to Ancient Egypt, including the Rosetta Stone and a recreation of the study of archaeologist Howard Carter, who discovered the pharaonic tomb and mummy of Tutankhamun in 1922.
The “Tras las huellas de Cleopatra en Carthago Nova” season runs from March to September and also features guided tours, family workshops and an escape room challenge as the program seeks to give prominence of the role of Egyptian culture in shaping the Roman city of Carthago Nova. Cleopatra Selene, the daughter of Cleopatra and Mark Anthony, was hugely influential in the unification of the Roman Empire and also enjoyed power of her own, ruling Mauretania (the Roman province of north-western Africa) north with her husband Juba II of Numidia.
The Tesoros de Egipto exhibition opens in the Augusteum on March 29 and includes pieces from the Louvre, the British Museum and the Museum of Cairo as well as replicas of the funeral treasures of Tutankhamun dating from 2489 BC. It can be visited every day of the week except Mondays.
A guided tour entitled “Tras las Huellas de Cleopatra” (In the footprints of Cleopatra) is being held (in Spanish) on April 1, 6, 7 and 8, tracing the influence of Cleopatra Selene in Carthago Nova.
Meanwhile, a dramatized family musical tour is being held every Sunday in April and May under the title of Teo y el Sarcófago Mágico, following a route from the Augusteum to the Roman forum district, and the “Misterio de Tutankamón” escape room activity, which is appropriate for family groups, is on offer at the Augusteum on Saturdays and Sundays in May and June.
Finally, a workshop in which younger participants can paint the constellations of the stars is being held at the same time as the guided tours of the Tesoros de Egipto exhibition on April 15 and 22 and May 27.
