ARCHIVED - Consumer watchdog tells Spanish airlines they need to accept cash on board flights
The organisation has accused the airlines of “abusive” and “unjustified” practices that are actually contrary to the law in Spain
The Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) has approached eight Spanish airlines, namely Iberia, Iberia Express, Air Europa, Iberojet, Plus Ultra, Volotea, Wamos Air and World2fly and insisted that they must allow customers aboard their flights pay in cash.
Dozens of carriers operating across Europe introduced card-only policies during the pandemic, so that passengers couldn’t use cash to buy snacks or duty-free on flights. This was one of the measures employed to stem the spread of infection but Spain’s consumer watchdog now considers it to be an infringement of rights.
Far from just suggesting a policy change, the OCU has reminded airlines that the General Law for the Defence of Consumers and Users was expressly modified on March 28 to make it an offence to refuse cash payments from passengers. Airlines that force customers to use a certain type of payment can therefore face hefty fines.
According to the OCU, the practice of only accepting credit card payments on flights is both “abusive” and “unjustified” since there are no longer any health reasons that warrant limiting the use of cash.
