Corvera Airport spends €125,000 a year keeping animals off the runway
The new contract covers everything from birds and wild boar to stray dogs and cats at Murcia's international airport

Aena has renewed its contract to keep animals away from the Region of Murcia International Airport at Corvera, ensuring planes don't collide with wildlife or face unexpected visitors on the runways.
Spain’s state-owned airport operator has awarded the job to Sociedad Andaluza de Control de Fauna for €248,000 over two years. The agreement includes the option for two additional 12-month extensions without any price changes, which means the company could end up working at the airport for up to four years and pocket around €125,000 annually. Another hefty bill that the flailing airport could definitely do without.
The contract covers the control, prevention, deterrence, removal and capture of all sorts of wildlife that might wander onto the airport grounds. That includes wild animals like birds, hares, rabbits, wild boar and foxes, as well as domestic animals such as dogs, cats and other pets that might have strayed into the area.
Aena wants to keep the environmental impact to a minimum, so the first approach will always be to scare animals away without harming them. The company can use acoustic devices, pyrotechnics and even falconry to send wildlife packing before they cause any problems.
However, if gentler methods don't do the trick, the contract does allow for traps and firearms with hunting ammunition to be used when necessary to "ensure the safety of operations". It's not the preferred option, but safety has to come first when planes are involved.
Trained animals are also part of the arsenal. Dogs can be deployed to scare away or hunt wild animals, while ferrets specialising in catching rabbits and birds of prey are particularly useful for creating an exclusion zone around the runway and the areas where aircraft move.
Birds of prey are considered one of the most effective measures for keeping other birds away, but Aena points out that they're just "one more of the defence measures" rather than a silver bullet.
The company will need to apply the "most effective and efficient solution for each wildlife hazard" depending on the specific situation, taking into account factors like light and weather conditions that might affect how animals behave around the airport.
