ARCHIVED - Costa del Sol celebrates one of its best summer seasons EVER
More than 5 million tourists descended on the Costa del Sol between June and August
After two gruelling years at the mercy of the coronavirus pandemic, Spain is making a comeback, and nowhere is this rebound more evident that on the sunny Costa del Sol, which has just celebrated one of its best summer seasons of all time.
Between June and August alone, more than 5 million visitors flocked to the coast, spending a whopping 7,400 million euros in Malaga as they went. This is an incredible 18.5% increase on the pre-pandemic summer of 2019, which in itself was classed as a “historic year” for the sector.
This was explained by the president of the Diputación de Málaga and Costa del Sol Tourism, Francisco Salado, on Monday September 19, who was eager to highlight the win which follows several “very bitter years”.
“It has been a sweet summer for the tourism sector,” he said, “a great summer, in some figures the best in history.”
Tourist numbers and hotel occupancy go hand in hand, so it’s no surprise that more accommodation (campsites, hotels, apartments and rural properties) was also booked during the summer of 2022 compared with 2019 – a respectable increase of 1.3%, in fact.
And in order to get here, tourists flooded Malaga airport, which welcomed almost 3 million travellers this summer. This is one area which hasn’t beaten 2019 figures, however, primarily as a result of a decrease in flights from the UK and Germany. In reality, the number of Britons visiting the Costa dropped by 17%, while German traffic fell by 24%.
The stats are still impressive considering that several airlines have been striking throughout the period, and the Costa del Sol base was one of the worst affected on many occasions.
And the future is bright, according to Mr Salado, who predicts the arrival of 481,834 travellers from the UK in the last quarter of the year.
“The Costa del Sol is the favourite destination for the month of September,” he concluded.
