Costly cocktails: Spanish bar goes viral over its pricey tipples

The Madrid bar left a penny-pinching customer shaken and stirred

People seem to be using social media more and more these days to review bars and restaurants, whether it’s to recommend a particular favourite or, frankly more commonly, to complain about bad service or food. But price is now also a major factor in customer critiques.

We’re all feeling the pinch of rising prices, but hoteliers in Spain are far from immune to inflation, and many have been forced to hike up the cost of menu items to cover more expensive electricity and produce.

One disgruntled tourist took to social media to “report” the “rip-off” he’d experienced in a bar in Madrid. The customer posted that he had been charged 44 euros for three mojitos in this popular Spanish venue, which he thought was outrageous.

The post caused serious controversy, and quickly went viral with many users agreeing that 44 euros is a bit on the steep side for three drinks. However, just as many sided with the pub, arguing that the customer chose to patronise a bar in the centre of Spain’s capital and should have expected to pay a premium.

Perhaps he should be grateful that was all he was charged for, as one customer in a pub in Zamora shared his bar tab, which listed a 1 euro cutlery charge and a 20 cent supplement each time his waiter had to come to the table.

The lesson is surely that it’s best to do your homework, especially if you’re visiting a big city. A quick search using the Trivago travel deals engine shows that, in this Madrid bar a portion of garlic prawns will set you back 17.50 euros and an Irish coffee costs 9.50 euros. Definitely not a spot for penny pinching.
