Costly fines in Spain for filling fuel incorrectly
The DGT can fine drivers 100 euros if they don’t behave appropriately in service stations in Spain
Not being familiar with the proper protocols for refuelling at a gas station in Spain could end up costing motorists dearly.
The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has issued a reminder to drivers about appropriate behaviours at service stations, since many of the rules are either not known or simply ignored.
First and foremost, the Traffic Regulations in Spain require engines to be switched off before petrol or diesel is refuelled.

The rules state that: “Owners of fuel distribution devices or employees may not provide fuel for loading if the engine is not stopped and the vehicle lights, electrical systems such as radios and devices that emit electromagnetic radiation such as mobile phones are not turned off.”
According to the DGT, the purpose of the regulations is to avoid risks that could lead to a fire; this is especially true in the case of mobile phones, due to the possible contact between a spark or radiation and fuel vapours.
Failure to comply with these measures could lead to a fine of up to 100 euros.
