ARCHIVED - Covid booster jabs approved for over 40s in Spain
Those aged over 40 are now eligible for their third vaccine in Spain
The Public Health Commission in Spain has approved a booster Covid jab for over 40s which is to be administered six months after the second dose of an ARNm Covid vaccine (Pfizer and Moderna).
A third jab for under 60s who received the AstraZeneca vaccine has also been approved, with priority being given to essential workers such as teachers, firemen and police officers.
However, despite boosters now being authorised for a wider portion of the population, the Public Health Commission has made it clear that the priority is to first vaccinate children and those who have yet to have any jabs as well as administer boosters to the over 60s before moving onto other population groups.
After that, it will be the turn of those in the 40-59 age bracket, and the vaccination programme will be rolled out as before, in descending age order.
In addition, anyone who had the Janssen single-dose is also eligible for a booster jab regardless of their age. So far, 80% of over-70s in the country have had their booster dose, along with 46% of over-60s and 49% of those who received the Janssen vaccine.
Despite the vaccination campaign advancing relatively fast in Spain, there is concern about the Omicron variant as experts believe that the vaccines could be less affective against this strain. The Comunidad Valenciana has already confirmed cases of Omicron and the variant is thought to have reached the Region of Murcia as well.
