ARCHIVED - Covid booster without appointment for over 60s in Murcia
Some 85,000 people in the Region of Murcia are yet to receive their first dose
A year after the coronavirus vaccination campaign officially began in Spain, the health authorities in the Region of Murcia announced on Monday December 27 that people over the age of 60 can now receive their booster dose without having to make an appointment.
Members of this age group can simply turn up at any of the vaccination points across the Region of Murcia and receive their third Covid shots.
At the same time, the administration of the third dose to those under 60 has begun in the Region, prioritising people who were inoculated with AstraZeneca including the majority of health care workers, the security forces and teachers – around 40,000 people in total.
Since Murcia began vaccinating some of its youngest population last week, the first dose has been administered to 25,643 children aged between 8 and 11.
Speaking at a press conference, the regional Minister of Health Juan Jose Pedreno highlighted the fact that the number of active cases in the Region has increased by 4,000 people in the last week alone – a jump of 40% - and appealed to the 85,000 Murcianos who have still not received any dose of the vaccine to do so as soon as possible.
On Christmas Eve, a total of 3,039 first doses were administered at mobile vaccination points across 26 municipalities, and from December 30 more than 200 troops will be called in with the aim of "reinforcing these points, given the great reception of the general population, with the aim that the 85,000 people who remain unvaccinated attend them".
