ARCHIVED - Covid outbreak affects 60 ICU staff in Malaga hospital
The Andalucía outbreak has affected healthcare workers who attended a Christmas dinner
A coronavirus outbreak in Málaga has left 60 intensive care workers from the Regional University Hospital in Málaga infected after a Christmas party.
All of those affected are healthcare workers and, of the 174 people who attended the celebration, so far 60 people have tested positive for the virus.
The festive meal took place on December 1 and lasted well into the night. Reportedly, all of the attendants took an antigen test, which tested negative, before attending the party. Most of those who have tested positive are vaccinated and asymptomatic, and are now self-isolating as per protocol.
As a large number of staff from the same department have been affected, the hospital has had to assign doctors and nurses from the emergency department to the intensive care unit in order to guarantee this incredibly important medical service.
This incident has prompted other departments in the hospital to cancel their Christmas parties or divide staff into two ‘bubble’ groups, to avoid compromising the entire workforce at once.
