ARCHIVED - Covid travel advice for Irish tourists heading to Spain
There are a number of safety measures in place for travel to Spain
With Met Eireann predicting “treacherous” conditions in the coming days throughout all of Ireland including rain, hail, sleet and gusts, it’s not surprising that many people are considering leaving the wintery weather behind in favour of sunnier climes. Spain has long been a favourite destination with the Irish, and after a record-breaking New Year’s Eve of balmy temperatures it is beckoning scores of intrepid travellers for a post-Christmas break in the sun.
Of course, winter holidays aren’t all plain sailing as many of Ireland’s most sought-after countries have implemented new Covid measures to counteract the spread of the Omicron variant. These include both travel restrictions and safety protocol once tourists arrive, so it’s important to know the local requirements in Spain before booking that trip.
Spain considers Ireland to be a country of risk and so anyone over 12 arriving from the Emerald Isle who is not fully vaccinated or recovered will be required to produce a negative test before flying. A PCR test can be taken up to 72 hours prior to arrival in Spain and a rapid antigen test can be taken within 48 hours.
All travellers arriving in Spain by air or sea, including children under 12, must fill in a health control form before they start their journey.
A facemask is now mandatory both outdoors and indoors, including on public transport and many communities require a Covid passport for entry into bars, restaurants and cafes. In addition, some regions have implemented capacity restrictions and closure curfews, so it is best to check the specific requirements for the area you are travelling to before booking.
For those unlucky enough to test positive for Covid in Spain, the mandatory quarantine period for asymptomatic patients has now been reduced from seven to 10 days. However, all coronavirus-positive tourists will have to complete the self-isolation period before being allowed to return to Ireland.
