ARCHIVED - Covid update 10 June: incidence rate in Spain continues to edge downwards
Four territories boast low risk incidence rates and Murcia is set to join them soon
Not for the first time since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic the data in the latest daily update published by Spain’s Ministry of Health on Thursday evening were distorted by an adjustment on the part of the health authorities of the region of Catalunya, who added over 9,000 confirmed cases to their accumulated total, all of them having occurred this year.
Nonetheless, the Thursday bulletin indicates a further slight slowing down of Covid infection across Spain, with the accumulated 14-day incidence rate dropping to 110.35 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. There is still a good deal of variation among the rates reported for each region, though, with the highest figures being those in La Rioja (199), Andalucía (189), the Basque Country (172) and Navarra (132).
At the other end of the scale, and below the threshold of 50 which marks “low risk” of infection, are the Comunidad Valenciana (40.2), the Balearics (41), Ceuta (44) and Galicia (46.3), with the Region of Murcia seemingly about to join them on 50.55.
The Thursday update reports a further 133 fatalities, taking the official Ministry total since the start of the pandemic last spring to 80,465, but the situation continues to improve in hospitals throughout the country. The 3,566 Covid patients receiving hospital treatment now account for just 2.88 per cent of all occupied hospital beds, while the equivalent proportion in intensive care units stands at 10.51 per cent and is continuing to decrease gradually as the immunization campaign progresses.
