ARCHIVED - Covid vaccine for children under five could be ready in February
Pfizer has developed a jab for youngsters aged between 6 months and 5 years
Less than two months after Spain began administering a special paediatric dose of the coronavirus vaccine to youngsters under the age of 11, pharmaceutical company Pfizer has announced that its new jab, suitable for children between the ages of six months and five years, is almost ready for market.
Both Pfizer and BioNtech are expected to submit an emergency use authorisation request for the new drug to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Tuesday February 1 and if all goes well, the vaccine could be available by the end of the month.
Pfizer is currently analysing the results of administering a third booster dose to minors under five years of age, although the results of this testing phase will not be known until at least the end of March.
A recent report shows that the FDA has appealed to companies to submit their data so that regulators could begin analysing the effectiveness of the two-shot regimen as soon as possible.
“The idea is, let’s go ahead and start the review of two doses,” the document read. “If the data holds up in the submission, you could start kids on their primary baseline months earlier than if you don’t do anything until the third-dose comes in.”
What the research has shown so far is that two doses of the vaccine in children aged two, three and four did not elicit a satisfactory immune response compared to adolescents and minors.
However, the results were far more favourable in minors aged between 6 months and two years, and the double jabs were shown to give adequate protections against Covid.
In the trial, youngsters aged between 6 months and five years of age received two doses of a 3 microgram injection, just one tenth of the dose given to adults, three weeks apart.
