ARCHIVED - Covid cases in Madrid triple overnight
Madrid believes the sixth wave will recede throughout Spain in ‘a matter of days’

At the height of the Christmas festivities, Madrid has experienced an unprecedented surge in coronavirus infections which now threaten the capital’s New Year celebrations. On Tuesday December 28, the community notified 21,131 new Covid cases – a staggering increase from the 6,189 infections reported the previous day.
With coronavirus cases virtually tripling overnight, ten more people lost their lives and the 14-day cumulative incidence rate has shot up past 2,000 infections per 100,000 inhabitants.
The Community of Madrid has remained steadfast in its dedication to avoiding severe restrictions throughout the sixth wave of the pandemic; regional authorities vociferously argued against introducing Covid passports and curfews as other autonomous communities have done and, at a Committee meeting on December 29, the regional president plans to ask that quarantine for asymptomatic patients be reduced to just five days.
In addition, the region has adopted the rather controversial measure of allowing city officials, such as firefighters and police officers, to continue working after testing positive for Covid providing that their viral load is low. This system, according to the regional health authorities, ensures that municipal workers cannot infect their colleagues.
It would appear that the relaxed restrictions in Madrid may now be taking their toll, however, as authorities are questioning whether mass celebrations such as the Puerta de Sol New Year’s Eve celebration, the Three Kings parade and the San Silvestre Vallecana should go ahead at all this year.
For now, the government has simply agreed to reduce capacity at these events and to impose additional safety measures.
Ultimately the president of Madrid, Isabel Diaz Ayuso, believes that the remission of the sixth wave is only days away and she has predicted that, while it was “very explosive in its contagion”, it should decline in much the same way. For this reason, she has concluded, further restrictions “are useless”.
