ARCHIVED - Covid incidence plummets over the weekend: Spain update February 22
The 14-day cumulative incidence has dropped 133 points in Spain
The week has begun in Spain with yet more encouraging data and as the sixth wave of the pandemic is beaten into a swift retreat, the government is preparing its roadmap to a new normality to present to Brussels next month. The cumulative incidence rate has plummeted by a further 133 points over the weekend and while the positivity rate is still far higher than the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) recommended 5%, all of the most important indicators are reducing day by day.
Coronavirus infections
The Ministry of Health has reported an additional 48,000 new infections on Monday February 21, which is considerably lower than the same day last week, when 68,706 cases were registered across the autonomous communities.
In the past two weeks, some 372,470 Covid positives have been reported, bringing the overall number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 10,858,000.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day incidence rate now stands at 786 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, down from 919 on Friday.
While all of the autonomous communities are making good headway, Galicia maintains the highest incidence rate of 1,270 cases, closely followed by the Valencian Community and the Region of Murcia.

After registering the lowest figure for several weeks Andalucía (453 cases) has conceded the top spot to the north African enclave of Melilla, which has reported just 453 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on Monday.
Youngsters aged between 12 and 19 continue to register the highest figure of 1,181 infections, followed by children in the under-11 age group.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
There are currently 9,364 patients hospitalised across Spain with Covid (down from 9,742 on Friday) while 1,224 people are being treated for more serious symptoms in the country’s ICU (down from 1,284).
This means that 7.56% of all hospital beds are occupied by coronavirus patients (down from 7.84%) while the figure in the ICU stands at 13.20% (13.79% on Friday).
The percentage of occupied Covid ICU beds in Aragon is 22.81%, the highest in the entire country.
In the last 24 hours, there have been 701 admissions and 573 discharges.
Spain has now registered 98,462 Covid-related deaths since the health crisis began after adding a further 490 fatalities over the past seven days. Both Ceuta and Melilla have not reported any fatalities in the last week, but Andalusia has reported 73 and the Basque Country 70.
