ARCHIVED - Current restrictions on non-passengers entering Spanish airports to continue
For the foreseeable future, only those travelling on flights will be allowed into airport terminals in Spain
Spain’s new Transport Minister has confirmed that there are currently no plans to ease the restrictions at airports, which means that only people arriving or departing are allowed inside the terminals. Since July 2020, it has not been permitted to greet loved ones in the arrivals hall or say goodbye in departures; instead, anyone not catching a flight must wait outside. A year later, and with the end of the second state of alarm, the national government plans to uphold the ban, despite Spain opening its borders to international tourism.
The decree validated by Congress last week relaxing the rules on wearing masks outdoors also allows officials to ease the restrictions at state-run airports, and while the Minister of Health hinted that some changes may be considered at a later date, this is not on the cards for the foreseeable future.
Last Wednesday, despite several allegations of “irresponsibility” from the regional governments, Spain succeeded in maintaining its policy of making the wearing of facemasks in outdoor areas optional rather than mandatory.
So, for the moment, only passengers with a valid ticket or boarding pass can access the inside of the airport, up to six hours before their flight. In addition, the law allows those accompanying minors or people with special needs to go inside.
