ARCHIVED - DANA arrives and sends temperatures plummeting: Spain weather forecast June 20-23
A cold weather front will put an end to one of the earliest and most extreme heatwaves ever seen in Spain
The heatwave which has scorched virtually all of Spain for the last week is finally coming to an end as a DANA storm sweeps across the peninsula, lowering temperatures as it passes and bringing abundant rain to the northern part of the country.
This episode of “extreme” heat, according to Aemet, began to subside on Sunday June 19 when the entry of a cold air mass from the Atlantic caused a “sharp and generalised drop” in temperatures, with many regions registering up to 12ºC less on the thermometers than the previous day.
For Monday June 20 and Tuesday June 21 showers and some heavy rain are forecast in the north with slightly cloudy skies in the rest of the country that could give way to some light rain in the late afternoon. Temperatures will continue to be between 5ºC and 10ºC above normal in eastern Cantabria, the Mediterranean coast and the Balearic Islands, while Alicante and much of the Valencian Community will continue to sizzle in temperatures above 30ºC.
Likewise in the Region of Murcia, temperatures will remain at an extremely high 37ºC.
In contrast, temperatures in Galicia, Castilla y Leon, Extremadura and Western Andalucía will be up to 10ºC lower than normal for this time of year.
The instability in the northern part of the country will continue on Wednesday June 22 but skies will remain clear in the south and the Balearic Islands. Continuing the trend of Monday and Tuesday, temperatures will be higher than usual for the most part but cooler along the western coast.
Little change is expected on Thursday June 23 but the temperatures will continue to decline for the most part, with the mercury hovering around the low 30s in Alicante and Murcia, dropping to a comfortable 28ºC in Malaga. It will remain cloudy along the Mediterranean coast while Saharan dust that will turn into muddy rain is forecast for much of the Balearic Islands.
