ARCHIVED - DANA causes widespread flooding in several communities in Spain
The storms which have been raging all week have brought heavy rain, gusts and rising sea levels throughout much of Spain
DANA storms (an isolated, high-altitude depression) continue to wreak havoc across Spain following several days of weather that has been unsettled at best. The autonomous community of Extremadura has been one of the worst affected, with unrelenting electrical storms and torrential rain battering the region since Wednesday night, September 22.
In the province of Badajoz, high levels of accumulated surface water have caused serious disruption on the A-66 between Almendralejo and Villafranca de los Barros in both directions, in addition to a section of the A-5 near Don Benito.
Meteorologists have reported that Merida saw more rainfall than any other town in Spain (46.6 litres per m2) while the Extremadura emergency services responded to 285 incidents between midnight and 11am on Thursday. A van was burned to the ground after being struck by lightning, while several schools were evacuated due to flooding.
Meanwhile, the province of Huelva in Andalucía remained on red alert on Thursday with heavy rain expected to leave an accumulation of up to 60 litres in just one hour. Emergencias 112 Andalucía dealt with more than 600 incidents in the municipalities of Isla Cristina, Ayamonte and Lepe, where homes and businesses were flooded after the sea level rose significantly.
Among the most notable incidents was the flooding of a school, nursery and nursing home in the municipality of Isla Cristina, while several hotels along the coast have also reported damage.
In the Balearic Islands, the most significant damage was reported in Mallorca, where 16 incidents were reported in the Santanyi area in the space of a couple of hours, the majority related to the flooding of homes, shops and public roads. Many of the surrounding roads became impassable, with firefighters called out to rescue several people who had become stranded in their vehicles. Despite the widespread chaos caused by the DANA, the regional government has since insisted that the situation is “under control.”
Since the episode of rains and storms began on September 21, the local emergency services have managed 148 incidents on the Islands: 124 in Mallorca, 18 in Menorca, five in Ibiza and one in Formentera.

According to the State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, several communities, including Andalucia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands will be under periods of yellow alert throughout the weekend.
