ARCHIVED - Data reveal that Spanish airlines Iberia and Air Europa ticket prices rose by 50 per cent this summer
Budget airlines experienced some of the largest price hikes between May and August
Ryanair announced the death knell on super cheap flights last month, explaining that the era of travelling around Europe on a shoestring has sadly been ended by rising fuel costs. Now it seems that the other traditional low-cost airlines are falling in line, according to a recent study by online payment company Wise, which indicates that European carriers in general have raised airfare by 30%, while the budget airlines have increased their ticket prices by a whopping 50%.
The study compared the average price of 130,000 airline tickets from 17 different carriers between May and August with the cost from the same period last year, and analysed data from 30 European countries.
The results show that Scandinavian Airlines has increased ticket prices the most, with an 81.5% hike, followed by Air France (+63.5%), Iberia (+57.8%) and Air Europa (+54.7%).
Keeping it relatively cheap for passengers are KLM, with an increase of 21.5%, Iberia Express (+19.4%) and Ireland’s Aer Lingus, which has increased the price of tickets by just 5.6%.
True to their word, of the low-cost carriers, Ryanair is the airline which has implemented the largest price hike (+50.1%) while Britain’s easyJet has registered the smallest increase, at 28.5%.
Ryanair boss Michael O’ Leary has estimated that the company’s average airfare will increase by ten euros in the next five years, thanks largely to the rising cost of fuel, “which is driving up airfares” and hiking up “household energy bills, which affects the disposable income of citizens."
The CEO’s explanation seems to be contradicted somewhat by Spanish budget airline Iberia Express, however, which managed to limit its ticket price increase considerably despite the fact that the carrier has been in the midst of a cabin strike at its Madrid base since August 28.
