Residents living near to the Playa de Galúa beach in La Manga del Mar Menor, within the Cartagena municipality, notified the Emergency Services just after 23:00 on Sunday evening that the corpse of a man had been sighted on the beach.
The Civil Guard attended the callout and confirmed that the man, believed to Caucasian in appearance, was indeed dead.
The corpse was removed for further examination and police have now confirmed that the man has been identified as a 68-year-old Spanish national and there were no signs of violence on the corpse.
The man was wearing swimming trunks when he was found and it is believed that he may have suffered a heart-attack or stroke while swimming and drowned.
Investigations continue.
