DGT fines: 500 euros for not carrying these three documents in Spain
These important documents can be in original or digital format in vehicles in Spain
The General Directorate of Traffic has set a 2050 objective to reduce fatal road traffic accidents to zero and to this end, officers who stop a motorist are entitled to request any of the vehicle or driver documentation they deem necessary to ensure maximum safety.
That being said, there are three mandatory documents that must be present in the vehicle at all times. Drivers can carry the originals in the car or a copy on their mobile, but failure to provide them can lead to fines of up to 500 euros.
Driving licence
The least serious fine for not carrying a driving licence is as little as 10 euros, but this can be hiked up to 80 en case of any of the data being incorrect. Motorists driving on expired licences will be fined 200 euros, and in the event that the driver has had his licence revoked, the penalty goes up to 500 euros.
Technical Inspection Card (ITV)
Another mandatory document is the technical inspection card. The fine for not carrying it in the vehicle is 10 euros, but if it has expired, drivers will have to pay 200 euros.

Vehicle registration certificate
Similar to the previous two, not carrying this document will cost motorists just 10 euros but if the driver is driving without authorisation, this penalty will increase to 500 euros.
Documents on a mobile phone
All of these documents are equally valid in digital format once uploaded to a mobile phone. This must be done via the DGT app, which can also be used to check penalty points and pay any fines accrued.
