A deafening bang startled residents of Murcia and Alicante this afternoon, leading to many calls to police
A loud sound like an explosion scared many people in the Region of Murcia and the province of Alicante out of their skins this afternoon, Tuesday November 21. The massive bang was heard in parts of the region such as Cartagena and in the neighbouring area of the Vega Baja. The noise, which was heard at around 5.30pm, was not a bomb, and the multiple emergency calls to local police were unfounded. It actually came from the passage of two Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft, reportedly belonging to the Royal Air Force (RAF) from the United Kingdom, which have been carrying out tests in the southeast of Spain. The fighter jets were practising military manoeuvres from the Base Aérea de Los Llanos airbase in Albacete, and the loud banging noise was produced when they broke the sound barrier as they flew faster than the speed of sound. These military tests are not uncommon in the area, and this time form part of a series of practice manoeuvres that are scheduled to take place on November 21, 22, 23, 24, 27, 28, 29 and 30 from 3.30pm to 6pm.When planes break the sound barrier, it creates a soundwave with amounts of sound energy, which to the human ear sounds similar to an explosion or the crack thunder.Image: Archive
