Discount on public transport in Spanish cities and towns extended until June 30

Every region in Spain has backed the government’s proposal to extend the 50% discount on public transport that will greatly reduce the price of bus and metro tickets in cities across the country.

Season and multi-trip tickets on urban and interurban public transport will be half price until at least June 30, with the Spanish government covering 30% and the autonomous communities the remaining 20%.

At the end of last year, the Spanish government agreed to renew the discount for the first half of 2023, but only in regions that committed to subsidising the costs. Thankfully, they all agreed by this week’s deadline.

The city discounts are on top of the free services offered to passengers on the Cercanías and Media Distancia train lines.

The new 50% discount on public transport in Andalucia will be applied to the consortium network card and to the Seville, Malaga and Granada metro.

The Region of Murcia had originally agreed to fund a 30% reduction from its own budget until June, but this will now be reduced to 20% to come in line with the government scheme so that passengers can still enjoy half price tickets.

In the Valencian Community, the discount will be applied as of February 1 to the entire Metrovalencia network, Alicante and Castellón TRAM, MetroBus and other concessions. This discount will be in addition to free public transport for people under 30 years.
