Easter rains fill Catalan reservoirs above emergency level
The reservoirs of the Ter-Llobregat have accumulated 103.59 cubic hectometres, but the local government says it is still too early to lift the state of emergency
The Sau reservoir is still the emptiest of the region’s water systems
The rains this Easter have allowed the reservoirs of the Ter-Llobregat system in Spain’s Catalonia to increase their reserves by almost 17%, up to a total of 103.59 cubic hectometres. They have now come to exceed the limit set by the Special Drought Plan, which establishes the state of emergency when it falls below 100 hectometres.
Even so, the Generalitat, the regional government in Catalonia, has made it clear that before it lifts the state of emergency it is necessary to study the context beyond achieving a certain volume of water. There is still no date for getting out of the drought emergency, which was declared on February 1, 2024.
The Ter-Llobregat system is made up of the Sau, Susqueda, Baells, Llosa del Cavall and Sant Ponç reservoirs. In the last few days, all of them have increased their volume of water, with Susqueda reservoir being the one that has recovered the most. The emptiest is still the Sau, with only 4.73% of its capacity.
The emergency phase has also been declared since September in the Darnius Boadella reservoir. This Monday April 1 it was at 11.64% and after the latest rains it has barely reached 11.68%.
The reservoirs of the Conca de l'Ebre, which depend on the Confederación Hidrográfica de l'Ebre (CHE), are at an average of 47.43% of their capacity.
In Andalucía, many of the reservoirs have now also risen above 40% of their capacity – enough to stave off further drought restrictions for now, but more rain is still needed if the region is to get through the summer.
