ARCHIVED - easyJet cancels ten planned routes with Spain
The cancellations in Spain come after the airline axed more than 200 flights over the weekend
British low-cost carrier easyJet has dealt its second blow to travellers in as many days by cancelling no fewer than ten planned routes to Spain on Tuesday April 5. Over the weekend, the airline axed more than 200 flights at short notice due to rostering issues as a result of Covid-related illnesses among its staff.
The cancellations affect the Spanish airports of Ibiza, Palma de Mallorca, Menorca and Barcelona.
However, easyJet issued a statement assuring that it “will operate the vast majority of its 1,500 flights today, with a small proportion cancelled in advance to give customers the possibility of rebooking on alternative flights.”
British Airways has also cancelled dozens of last-minute flights as such a high proportion of staff are out sick, and carriers fear the situation will get worse in the coming days due to the level of ongoing illness in the UK. British travellers who began their Easter school holidays this week have been greatly affected, facing numerous flight cancellations at many airports, most notably Heathrow and Gatwick, since Monday.
In addition, rail services across the English Channel were affected by significant delays.
On March 27, easyJet removed the requirement for passengers and its crew to wear masks on board, following the UK’s decision nine days earlier to scrap all remaining Covid-19 travel restrictions. This means that unvaccinated travellers arriving in Britain no longer need to produce a negative test or complete a passenger locator form.
On all flights between England, Northern Ireland, Jersey, Isle of Man, Denmark, Sweden, Gibraltar, Switzerland, Hungary, Iceland and Poland it is no longer a legal requirement to wear a mask, and easyJet’s crew are subject to the same rules.
