Electric car uptake in Murcia is growing at more than double the national rate
New figures show a 71% jump in registrations during August alone, with nearly three in ten new cars now either fully electric or plug-in hybrid
Spain has been pushing hard to accelerate the electric vehicle transition, backed by significant national investment, but Murcia's regional figures suggest the local approach is delivering results that go well beyond the national trend.
In raw numbers, 484 electrified vehicles were registered in the Region during August, up from 283 in August 2025. For the year to date, between January and August, a total of 3,944 electrified vehicles have been registered, compared to 2,420 during the same period last year, a 63% increase. That puts Murcia fourth in Spain for year-to-date growth, behind Navarre, Extremadura and Asturias.
Nearly 29% of all new vehicles registered in the Region in August were either fully electric or plug-in hybrids. To put it another way, almost three in every ten new cars on Murcia's roads are now electrified, split between 13% fully electric and 16% plug-in hybrid.
Rising fuel costs have played a significant part in pushing drivers towards electric alternatives, and Federico Miralles, Director General of Industry, Energy and Mines, says the region's own tax incentives are amplifying that shift. "The data confirms that electric mobility is advancing in the Region at a much faster pace than it is happening in Spain and demonstrates that the incentives we have made available to citizens are helping to facilitate this change," he said.
Those incentives are worth knowing about. Murcia residents can deduct up to 30% of the purchase price of an electric vehicle from the regional portion of their income tax, with a maximum deduction of €7,000. There is also a separate deduction of up to €4,000 for installing a home charging point, which sits alongside broader national investment in public charging infrastructure.
Miralles said the goal is clear: "We want to continue removing barriers so that more and more families can make the switch to electric mobility, and the evolution of registrations shows that the Region is responding to these incentives far above the rest of Spain."
