ARCHIVED - Electricity prices in Spain double on Thursday December 9
Energy is four and a half times more expensive than it was a year ago in Spain
Consumers across Spain no doubt breathed a sigh of relief on Wednesday, as the cost of electricity in the wholesale market plummeted over the national holiday by an enormous 48%. The reprieve was short-lived, however, as energy prices have shot up once again on December 9 to 216.74 euros per megawatt hour (MWh).
There is both good and bad news, as electricity will be 1.78% cheaper this Thursday than it was a week ago. On the other hand, compared to the same date last year when each megawatt cost just 47.52 euros, the price is now four and a half times higher.
The cheapest time for customers to run household appliances this Thursday is between 4am and 5am, while the most expensive will be from 9pm to 10pm, when it will cost a hefty 252.59 euros / MWh.
In November, the average consumer received an electricity bill of 115.18 euros, 68.1% higher than in the same month last year. The fact of the matter is that despite the government’s assurances that households will pay no more this year than they did in 2018, December’s bills would have to hit zero in order for this to come to fruition.
