Elon Musk and Trump back Spain's Vox party as Macron tries to broker Ukraine peace deal
Trump and Musk praised Spain’s far-right party, while the French President has been doing his best to act as broker between the EU and the US

The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington saw notable figures from the global right-wing spectrum gather to voice their shared ideological goals. Among them, former US President Donald Trump and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk made significant statements regarding Spain’s far-right party, Vox.
Trump, concluding the high-profile event, took a moment to acknowledge Santiago Abascal, leader of Vox, with a simple but meaningful statement: “Thank you, Santiago.” The Spanish politician, attending the event in person, responded by standing in appreciation. Abascal was the only Spanish politician to attend Trump’s inauguration.
Meanwhile, Musk predicted a victorious future for Vox, claiming they “will win the elections,” a statement that shows his loose grasp of the practical realities of Spain’s electoral system.
The former US president’s speech covered a broad spectrum of policy matters, from tariffs to immigration. He criticised President Joe Biden’s handling of the war in Ukraine, calling him “incompetent” for involving the US in Ukraine’s defence against Russia, though he simultaneously suggested that a resolution to the war was close.
The event featured other prominent right-wing leaders, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who participated virtually. Meloni backed US Vice President JD Vance and denounced “elites” who opposed his views, especially after his remarks suggesting that Europe’s greatest threat comes “from within.”
Argentinian President Javier Milei also addressed CPAC, declaring an end to the “era of the omnipresent state.” However, he made no reference to the controversy surrounding the promotion of the $LIBRA cryptocurrency, which has raised concerns in Argentina.
Trump and Macron discuss Ukraine peace deal
Meanwhile, Trump announced plans to host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski in Washington to finalise an agreement on the transfer of Ukraine’s natural resources in exchange for US aid. The deal, which has been discussed in recent public exchanges between the two leaders, is part of Trump’s strategy to ensure the US recovers some of the billions in military and economic support provided to Kyiv.
French President Emmanuel Macron joined Trump for a meeting on Ukraine, highlighting Europe’s role in securing an end to the conflict, which started when Russia invaded Ukraine three full years ago now. Macron’s visit to Washington followed discussions with European leaders, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. While his European counterparts attended a pro-Ukraine summit in Kyiv, Macron opted to meet Trump to emphasise that peace efforts must involve Ukraine as an active participant, not merely a subject of US-Russian negotiations.
Macron’s visit also aimed to secure a commitment from Trump to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin into a legitimate peace agreement, rather than a temporary ceasefire. The French leader cautioned against repeating past mistakes, referencing the 2014 Minsk agreements that Russia later disregarded.
Trump has suggested that European troops could be deployed in Ukraine as part of a broader peace deal, a move already backed by France and the UK. However, the proposal has raised concerns among European leaders wary of further escalation with Russia.
