Endesa Spain suffers a cyberattack and confirms the theft of customer data
Names, contact details, ID numbers and bank account information all across Spain may have been compromised

Energía XXI, the main energy supplier for Endesa, one of Spain's biggest electricity and gas companies, has told customers their personal data may have been stolen in a cyberattack.
The company announced through its official website that hackers gained "unauthorised and illegitimate access to its commercial platform". Some customer information has been compromised as a result.
"Despite the security measures implemented by this company, we have detected evidence of unauthorised and illegitimate access to certain personal data of our customers related to their energy contracts, including yours," the company said in a statement.
So what information did the hackers get their hands on? According to Energía XXI, the attackers may have accessed and stolen basic identification data, contact information, national identity card numbers, contract details and potentially payment methods including IBANs. The good news is that passwords were not compromised.
The company says there's currently no evidence that any of the stolen data has been used fraudulently and considers it "unlikely that a high-risk impact on your rights and freedoms will materialise". Even so, they're urging customers to keep their eyes peeled over the coming weeks.
The risks from this kind of data leak include identity theft, the information being made public or used for phishing and spam campaigns. Energía XXI is asking customers to pay "special attention to possible suspicious communications that you may receive in the coming days and to report any anomaly or distrust that you may detect in this regard through our call centre by calling the following telephone number: 800 760 250."
The company also recommends not giving out personal data or sensitive information to people you don't know and reporting any suspected fraudulent use to them or to the police.
Sancho Lerena, an expert in IT management and security and CEO of Pandora FMS, explains what hackers typically do with stolen data.
"These types of cyberattacks have different objectives. Stealing data to resell it is very common at the height of the black market. But they also seek to steal to obtain a ransom in exchange, or simply paralyse a system and generate chaos and mistrust. This last point is key, especially now where cybersecurity and geopolitics are so united," he said.
According to an analysis by Pandora FMS using INCIBE data, cyberattacks on essential sectors jumped by 43% last year. The energy sector, which handles massive amounts of data and is crucial for keeping the country running, suffered almost 9% of these incidents. Many experts in the field are increasingly concerned that "strategic operators are more threatened than ever."
Experts recommend that companies have "systems and training so that you have your own team dedicated to it, without having to outsource all the protection for a faster response and more detailed knowledge."
Since discovering the breach, Energía XXI has put all its security protocols into action and taken the necessary technical steps to contain the damage. They've blocked the compromised user accounts, analysed their log records and contacted affected customers. The company is continuing to monitor for any new suspicious activity and has informed the Spanish Data Protection Agency about the incident.
