Entire Spanish town near Madrid goes on sale for just 180,000 euros
The Segovia village stretches almost 5,000 square metres and comes with its very own castle
Most people at one time or another have dreamed of owning their own little pocket of paradise in Spain, but a real-life fairytale opportunity has just come on the market. The municipality of Matandrino, located an hour and a half outside Madrid, comes complete with almost 5,000 square metres of land, 17 properties and its very own castle, and it’s all on sale for the bargain price of 180,000 euros.
Situated in the Prádena area, about 50 kilometres from Segovia and 120 kilometres from the capital of Spain, the township of Matandrino was abandoned in 1963. Originally known as Mata Endrino, the town owes its name to the presence of blackthorns in the area, trees whose fruit is used to make jam and pacharán.
But the standout has to be the old castle, whose existence in the municipality dates back to the 15th century.
However, the stunning village and all of the history that goes with it is now doomed to disappear if a brave investor doesn’t step forward to rescue it.
While the buildings are little more than ruins, the town’s cheap price tag has attracted buyers in the past. Its previous owner, Roque Benito, purchased Matandrino back in 2005 with the intention of redeveloping the area. However, his plans were scuppered by the 2008 financial crisis and now that his family has moved out of the area, he has decided to offload it again.
And while the town might seem like a bargain, the price has actually shot up by 80% since 2022, when it could have been snapped up for just 100,000 euros.
Spain’s real estate landscape has changed dramatically in recent years, as highlighted in data released by the General Council of Notaries. In 2023, home sales in the country experienced an 11.2% decline compared to the previous year, accompanied by a significant 21.3% decrease in new mortgage loans for home purchases.
