ARCHIVED - Escaped camels run amok on Madrid streets
Eight camels and a llama were found wandering around Madrid, Spain after being freed from the circus
In the early hours of last Friday, eight camels and a llama were spotted walking the streets of Madrid after escaping from the circus. At around 5am on November 5, the animals were found in the Carabanchel neighbourhood, close to the Quirós Circus.
The llama and Bactrian camels, recognisable for having two humps and thick hair, were rounded up by police officers and returned to the circus “safe and sound”.
Circus manager, Mati Muñoz, stated that the electric fence of the camels’ enclosure had been cut, and accused animal rights activists of “sabotaging” their private property as they apparently do every year.
The Circo Quirós is one of the few circuses left in Spain that still uses wild animals in its shows. Nine of the 17 autonomous communities in Spain place a ban on the use of wild animals in circuses, including Murcia and the Valencian Community, while theoretically the city of Madrid should also prohibit the use of animals in circus shows.
