EU approves ground-breaking nature restoration law
The legislation aims to protect and recover the European Union’s threatened land and sea
After several months of incessant debate, the European Commission has this week passed its ground-breaking nature restoration law which will apply recovery measures to 20% of the EU’s land and sea by 2030. The legislation will be extended by 2050 to cover all of the damaged ecosystems.
The law was very nearly quashed by the opposition, who argued that the measures will further threaten landowners and farmers who are still reeling from the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
“Less land for farmers, less sea for fishermen, less activity for businesses, and fewer European products and jobs for our citizens,” said Rosanna Conte, an Italian MEP from the Identity and Democracy group, during a heated debate on Tuesday. “These are the heavy repercussions of the proposals contained in a regulation permeated with ideology and counterproductive for nature itself.”
However, scientists insist that the nature restoration law is key in reversing the damage caused by pollution, climate change and human exploitation of the EU’s land and waters. Those lobbying against the legislation, they said, are guilty of spreading misinformation that has no basis is science.
The unavoidable fact is that more than 60% of the land in the European Union is in terrible condition, as are 81% of natural habitats, threatening the survival of native animals and plant life.
But, in a last minute nod to the concerned farming sector, the Commission agreed to delay the implementation of the law on agricultural land until a formal assessment of the EU’s food security has been completed.
“We want to implement this in a fair manner in the EU – and not with an environmental hammer,” said Daniel Voces de Onaíndi, the managing director of the fishing lobby group Europêche.
