ARCHIVED - EU plans to limit validity of Covid passport to 9 months
The EC wants to safeguard travel throughout the European Union
As coronavirus cases continue to rise in Spain and across much of the globe, many people are still sceptical about the effectiveness of the Covid-19 vaccine. Now the European Commission (EC) has again changed the trajectory by proposing on Thursday November 25 that the validity of the digital certificate for travel, or Covid passport as it is widely known, be limited to nine months after the second vaccine has been administered. The European Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders, also wishes to prioritise travellers vaccinated with brands approved by the WHO.
The logic, according to the experts, is that boosters are most likely to be required after nine months anyway, but Mr Reynders has insisted that the value of the digital cert can’t be underestimated, and claimed that Brussels “proposes to extend it beyond next summer as a measure to facilitate safe, free movement.”
The Commission also plans to ask all member countries to allow travellers in possession of WHO-authorised vaccines to freely enter their countries as of January 10. In order to encourage more travel, the EU has suggested that all passengers who have received a WHO-approved jab which is not approved by Europe’s drug regulator and those who have previously recovered from Covid should be asked to submit a negative PCR test prior to travelling.
Those who do not have a Covid digital certificate, "should be allowed to travel but may be required to take a test before or after the trip," concluded the commissioner.
