ARCHIVED - EU salmonella outbreak linked to Spanish eggs
Two deaths have already been reported in Spain and France
European public health and food safety agencies have warned of a large active outbreak of salmonella with confirmed cases in the last year in six countries and linked to eggs produced in Spain. In total, 272 patients have been identified, 25 of whom have required hospitalisation and two have died.
The initial investigation began last September in France when an increase in cases of salmonellosis raised alarm bells. This infection is usually mild, causing symptoms similar to a tummy bug, but its ramifications in the elderly or people with underlying illnesses can be deadly.
Studies allowed scientists to identify the strain and it was traced back to three poultry farms in Spain; after the alert was launched by France, several other European countries reported cases, many of them related to trips to Spain and so far, France has confirmed 216 cases, Spain 22, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom 12 each, Norway 7 and Denmark 3.
There are currently more than 1,400 egg-producing farms in Spain with some 47 million laying hens, and around a fifth of the eggs produced each year are exported. Because poultry is one of the main culprits for salmonella bacteria, countries around the world employ stringent control measures in farms. One of the three farms in Spain found to be harbouring the infection had not complied with the regulations for two years.
The fear now is that, because of a lack of reporting of cases, the salmonella outbreak may be present in more farms, and the European authorities have recommended that investigations be extended in all countries where the strain is detected.
According to the report, there are strong indications that salmonella is “spreading” across Europe and that "it may be circulating through more farms, inside and outside of Spain."
