ARCHIVED - Experts clear soft furnishings from OS 35 ship to prevent further contamination
The clean-up operation of the Gibraltar oil spill is advancing “positively”, according to government
While the oil spill caused by the crash of the OS 35 tanker in the Bay of Algeciras last week continues and authorities from both Gibraltar and Spain are still working hard to contain the damage, there is cause for hope and the Gibraltar government has declared the situation is advancing “positively”.
The Salvamento Maritimo Spanish marine rescue service has reported that the bay is clear of oiling and sheening on the surface, and the situation in this regard has improved significantly on the east side of Gibraltar, too.
The improvement in the surface conditions of the water off the coast of Cadiz is partly due to the efforts of the catamaran Horizon, which is skimming free-floating sheen off the water and will be operational 24/7.
In addition, new sea booms are being put in place to contain the spread of oil outside the catchment area, which seem to be working as there is no indication of new arrival of oil on the shoreline.
The Playa de Poniente beach in La Línea de la Concepción in Spain, just across from Gibraltar, has been reopened after it was closed for oil to be cleaned off it.
At the same time, excess oil from the OS 35 ship is being pumped off so it can’t leak into the sea, and the vessel is also being cleared of any other chemicals, paint and soft furnishings so these don’t float away and contaminate the water too.
