ARCHIVED - Explosion in Madrid leaves five-year-old boy dead and his mother and baby brother in critical condition
A gas leak in a storefront caused the blast which killed one boy, 5, and severely injured his mother and baby brother
At 7.15pm this Thursday evening, October 6, an explosion took place in a shop on Calle Oslo in the town of Alcorcón in Madrid, seriously injuring two people and killing a third, a five-year-old boy.
A family living in one of the flats closest to the incident, composed of a 30-year-old mother and her two children aged 5 years and 9 months, was the worst affected by the blast. All three were poisoned by smoke inhalation, and the eldest of the children died.
The mother and baby were found by Madrid emergency services in cardiorespiratory arrest and had to be revived and rushed to hospital in a very serious condition.

As a huge tower of smoke billowed from the ground-floor shopfront on the corner of the six-storey building, paramedics attended to eight other residents who suffered less severe injuries due to smoke inhalation.
Firefighters evacuated the inhabitants of four apartments on the street and around 25 families had to spend the night outside their homes.
The cause of the explosion is currently thought to be an accidental gas leak. The commercial premises in question was in the process of being converted into a restaurant.
During the renovation works, the workers cut a gas pipe and alerted the emergency services, according to the head of the Alcorcón Fire Brigade, Raúl Esteban. When they arrived at the scene, the fire “was already well developed”.
There was also a copious amount of smoke produced because the premises was also being used to store several bales of rock wool, a material used for soundproofing and that gives off a large amount of smoke when it burns.
This smoke seeped into “the stairwells and all the homes”, choking the nearby residents and causing the fateful accident yesterday morning.
